I am enjoying getting to know your children. We have been sharing stories, learning new greetings and playing name games as we work on building community together. Students learned our class rules: Be safe. Be kind. Do your best. We also talked about the meaning of our school motto: Scholarship, Stewardship, Citizenship (Love of learning. Taking care of our place. Taking care of each other.)
For reading, we are in the process of reading with students individually to assess reading and phonics skills. We have been reading books and writing about belonging and what it means to be part of a community. I wrote a postcard to each student and am encouraging them to write back to me often. We have a "magic mailbox" in class where they can "mail" me letters. The students began painting self-portraits that will hang in our hallway.
In math first graders worked on counting up and counting back from any number between 0 and 20. They worked on adding different combinations to make a sum of 6. Second graders practiced making ten, adding to ten, and adding to a multiple of ten.
During Out & Abouts students began exploring the Sunflower Garden and the Backyard Garden and started learning about the plants and animals that call the garden home. We talked about what a habitat is and the things animals and plants need to survive. Students played Human Camera, looked at insects through magnifying lenses, built insect homes, weeded and put fresh soil in the raised beds.
For now, there is no homework, but I encourage you to read with your child daily for 20 - 30 minutes. It's good to spend some time with them reading to you and some time with you reading aloud to them. Reading aloud to children helps them develop reading skills, can lead to interesting and meaningful discussions, and strengthens parent-child relationships.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at e.conway@fgcschool.org.
