Last week, Barn Swallows practiced identifying the story elements of characters, setting, problem and solution. I modeled this skill while reading Bear Has a Story to Tell and Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed. On Friday, students broke into four teams to draw and write about one story element of The Goat Lady. When they had a completed a drawing and sentence to describe that element of the story, they presented their work to the class.
In math, first graders learned new games to practice adding and subtracting. They practiced counting on and counting back to solve addition and subtraction equations. Second graders learned how to review an assessment and to try to understand their mistakes in order to improve. Students did a good job of asking questions and trying to figure out what they need to do differently to solve addition and subtraction problems accurately. After reviewing the Unit 1 Assessment, they continued working with place value by counting baskets of 10 tennis balls and single tennis balls and writing the amount. They then figured out how many more or less balls they would need to reach a target number. Students with workbooks can now complete up to page 35 in the Home Connections book.
For our Out & About on Thursday, we went to the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge where students learned about the animals and habitats at the refuge and looked at pelts and skulls to learn about animal adaptations. Students discussed whether animals were predators or prey based on their eye placement and type of teeth. Thank you to all who have been chaperoning Out & Abouts!
Don't forget the deadline for Scholastic Book Orders. Ordering should be done online. I have extra catalogs and instructions in class. Please let me know if you need a catalog and instruction packet. If you want to order, but have trouble accessing the Scholastic website, please let me know and I'll try to help you find an alternate way to order. Last time we received enough points and freebies that each child was able to take home a book for free! Thanks to Elise di Sabella for organizing the book orders.
Bring your whole family, have a lovely dinner, and help your community! Every student at FGCS made a bowl this year, with the help of Pacific University's clay studio. We are having a wonderful event called Empty Bowls. November 22nd (the Friday before Thanksgiving break) from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Forest Grove Senior Center. You will be able to purchase a bowl made by students for $5, then you will get to fill it with soup and have dinner. All of the money raised will go to HomePlate Youth an organization going to help feel homeless teenagers in Washington County. It is a great way to give back to our community right before Thanksgiving. I hope to see you there. If you have any questions about the event or want to help out email Stephanie at s.woods@fgcschool.org.
Buy a Yearbook Online! We got off to a slow start selling yearbooks this year because we didn't have the link to buy them online, and we didn't have people order them when students registered for school. We just got the link! You can go online and buy a yearbook at: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/NjM2NTg= Yearbooks are $20. If you think you may have bought one already, please see Rebecca in the Main Office. You can also purchase a yearbook in the Main office with cash or check. Thank you for supporting the FGCS yearbook.
I hope everyone enjoys their week off with family and friends!
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at e.conway@fgcscool.org.
