November 12, 2019

Last week, Barn Swallows practiced identifying the main ideas and details in nonfiction.  They read books about forest habitats, forest animals and salmon.  We started the week with me modeling how to identify main idea and details. Later in the week, they participated in discussions about the main ideas and details in books about salmon. We ended the week with students doing an activity where they worked with partners to sort sentences from A Forest Habitat into main ideas and details.

In math, first graders worked on developing addition and subtraction strategies, particularly doubling, counting on and counting back.  Second graders took a pre-assessment for a new unit and began to practice using place value.  They listened to a story about Zero the Hero and played a game called "Scoop, Count, and Compare" where students used estimation to try to scoop as close to 125 beans as possible.  They then grouped the beans into small containers of 10 in order to count them.  They figured out the difference between the actual number of beans they scooped and 125.

Our salmon eggs arrived on Thursday!  We will be observing part of their lifecycle and will release them into the Tualatin River at Rood Bridge Park on December 19th.

For our Out & About on Thursday, we went to Smith Homestead in the Tillamook Forest.  Students played a game that taught what happens to animals when they lose their natural habitat, observed materials in the forest that can provide shelter for animals, and built shelters that provide access to food and water in addition to providing space and protection.  Thank you to all who have been chaperoning Out & Abouts!

Don't forget the deadline for Scholastic Book Orders.  Ordering should be done online.  I have extra catalogs and instructions in class.  Please let me know if you need a catalog and instruction packet. If you want to order, but have trouble accessing the Scholastic website, please let me know and I'll try to help you find an alternate way to order.  Last time we received enough points and freebies that each child was able to take home a book for free!  Thanks to Elise di Sabella for organizing the book orders.

Bring your whole family, have a lovely dinner, and help your community! Every student at FGCS made a bowl this year, with the help of Pacific University's clay studio.  We are having a wonderful event called Empty Bowls.  November 22nd (the Friday before Thanksgiving break) from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Forest Grove Senior Center.  You will be able to purchase a bowl made by students for $5, then you will get to fill it with soup and have dinner.  All of the money raised will go to HomePlate Youth an organization going to help feel homeless teenagers in Washington County.  It is a great way to give back to our community right before Thanksgiving.  I hope to see you there.  If you have any questions about the event or want to help out email Stephanie at s.woods@fgcschool.org.

Buy a Yearbook Online! We got off to a slow start selling yearbooks this year because we didn't have the link to buy them online, and we didn't have people order them when students registered for school.  We just got the link! You can go online and buy a yearbook at: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/NjM2NTg=     Yearbooks are $20.  If you think you may have bought one already, please see Rebecca in the Main Office.  You can also purchase a yearbook in the Main office with cash or check.  Thank you for supporting the FGCS yearbook.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at e.conway@fgcscool.org.
