Last week we read books about forests and visited Gales Creek Campground.  Students learned about the importance of both living and nonliving parts of ecosystems, about food webs and energy cycles.  In the afternoons, we wrote poetry.  As we read poems, Students added to our list of what we have noticed about them.  We also learned about two new types of poetry, shape poems and haiku. Haiku are poems with three lines, the first line has 5 syllables, the second has 7 syllables, and the third has 5 syllables.  On Thursday, students looked for macro invertebrates in the creek at Gales Creek Campground, had boat races, and pretended to be an animal making a home in the forest.

Second graders worked on strategies for solving multiple-digit addition and subtraction problems.  These strategies included mental strategies that are difficult for students.  If you are completing homework and your student is struggling to use the mental strategies shown on the homework page, it is okay to use another strategy.  Please reinforce the idea that different strategies work better for different people, and there is more than one way to solve a math problem. Second graders can complete any homework through module 4, lesson 24.  First graders are working on collecting, sorting and organizing data using tables, tally marks and bar graphs.  First graders can complete any homework through module 3, lesson 13.

Check out the photo album!  There are lots of new photos.
