Leading up to our All School Meeting performance on Friday last week,  Barn Swallows learned about bravery and courage.  They shared times that they have been brave, talked about other people they know who are courageous, and discussed times in the future when they might need to be brave.  Several students talked about being nervous about performing so we discussed strategies for staying calm and ways to think about anxiety that help people feel less anxious.  We read both fiction and nonfiction books about courageous characters, including: The Boy and His Jaguar; Oh, The Places You'll Go; Thundercake; and Brave Irene.

In math, first graders continued using number lines. The number lines were used for counting forward and backward, adding and subtracting by fives and tens, and counting on or back by tens from any number (example - 7, 17, 27, 37, etc.).  Second graders began a unit on measurement.  They practiced choosing appropriate tools for measuring and were introduced to measuring with inches and centimeters.  We read a book called, How Big is a Foot? and discussed the need for standard units of measurement.  They learned that to measure length accurately, they need to line up the zero on a ruler or measuring tape with the edge of the item they are measuring.

On Friday, Barn Swallows performed at the All School Meeting.  Students read a fact about sound, explained the instrument that they made for Celebrations of Learning, and played a song together for the school.  The next All School Meeting will be on March 20th and the theme will be Superheroes.  Please remember that students should not wear masks for spirit days. The reason for this pertains to safety. Masks obscure our identities, making it hard or impossible to know who the mask-wearer is. Part of maintaining a safe school culture is making sure that people can be easily identified as belonging here.

Please check the snack schedule for your week to bring snacks.  Also, please read the email that Vanessa has sent with updates on how FGCS and the Forest Grove School District are addressing the Coronavirus.  In class, we have talked about the importance of not spreading germs during cold and flu season with frequent and thorough hand-washing and by not touching your face.  I'm also cleaning frequently touched surfaces during student breaks.
