Last week Barn Swallows read another Patricia Gallagher Book Award Nominee, Interrupting Chicken, by David Ezra Stein. Stockton brought in a related book from home called Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise. Both books were well-liked. Students have been practicing supporting their opinions about books with reasons. We also read several books about how animals and birds make and use sound. Students began making connections between these books and our sound experiments to begin planning an instrument they might make during our In & Abouts in the upcoming weeks.
Individual reading assessments are complete. Student reading groups were adjusted slightly in order to group students according to how they did on this assessment. We regularly assess students to make sure they are in a reading group that is focused on the skills each student needs to be practicing in order to continue to improve as a reader.
During math, first graders worked on finding as many ways as they could to add to sums of 6, 7, 9 and 10. They looked at different properties of addition to help them better understand number relationships. Second graders worked together to estimate and then count a large collection of craft sticks, regrouping the sticks into hundreds, tens, and ones as needed. I posed double-digit addition problems for students to solve and modeled the problems with the bundled sticks. Students solved problems and shared solutions and strategies.
We could use volunteers for building instruments on February 6th and February 13th from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Please contact a.staats@fgcschool.org if you are interested in volunteering.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at e.conway@fgcschool.org.
