Last week, we read Before She Was Harriet, How Does Sound Change?, and What is Sound? We talked about the importance of being curious and of asking good questions. Students generated a list of questions that they have about sound. After completing sound experiments and demonstrations on Thursday, we discussed whether or not any of their questions were answered. Students are anxious to read all of the Patricia Gallagher Award nominees, so on Friday we read I’m Trying to Love Spiders.
In math, first graders worked on math completing assessments. Second graders practiced using an open number line to add two-digit numbers. They worked on a portion of the Bridges Comprehensive Growth Assessment.
On Thursday, we had a morning Out & About to The Oregon Food Bank where we packed two-pound bags of frozen green beans. Students packed enough green beans for 1,303 meals. (First graders will learn more about growing and cooking food next year when we focus on our school and community gardens.) During the afternoon, we experimented with sound to learn that sound travels through gases, liquids, and solids, that sound reflects off some materials and is absorbed by others, and that high and low pitched sounds give off different vibrations.
This Friday we have an All School Meeting. The spirit day theme is Career Day. Students can come dressed for a career that they find interesting. Keep in mind that they will be going out to recess after the meeting so their outfit should work for outdoor play. If your child decides to come to school dressed for career day, make sure their outfit and accessories are school appropriate (no weapons). In the afternoon, we will be visiting the library. Children with library cards can check out up to 3 books. I will check out a book for each child who doesn't have their own library card.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns, e.conway@fgcschool.org.
